Askimo's new built-in Local LLM provider downloads a platform-matching llama-server binary and lets you browse, search, and download GGUF chat and embedding models straight from Hugging Face. One toggle, one model picker, zero extra installs: Ollama and LM Studio become optional, not required.
The best AI desktop app isn't the one with the best single model - it's the one that lets you use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Ollama together. Switch models mid-conversation, keep sensitive data local, and cut API costs by routing simple tasks to free local models. Askimo is free, open source, and works on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
ChatGPT Desktop offers official OpenAI integration with voice support and seamless GPT model access. Askimo provides all-in-one AI flexibility, connecting to OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, X AI, Ollama, LM Studio, LocalAI, and Docker AI in one desktop app with local storage, RAG support, and offline capabilities. Compare features, pricing, and use cases to choose the right AI chat client for your workflow.
Askimo protects data through AES-256-GCM encryption, local-only storage, and zero cloud dependency. API keys are encrypted before disk storage, never in plain text. macOS uses system Keychain; other platforms use secure local encryption with strict permissions. No files uploaded to external servers or background analytics. Communication only happens with AI services you configure. Conversations, keys, and preferences stay on your machine.
